Many of us think of the new year as a time to let go of everything that’s happened in the past year and start off fresh. Often it marks a time to pursue new goals, ditch old habits, and focus on personal growth. But what if you didn’t have to wait 365 days for that reset button? What if you could do it in just an hour?
Sensory deprivation therapy gives your body and minds the opportunity to shut off the systems that respond to external stimuli. With very little conscious effort, your physical and mental foundation is being rejuvenated. Your bones and muscles can recover. Your mind can journey inward. Your body is finally given a chance to deal with all that wear and tear of a lifetime of stressors.
When people ask me what it’s like getting out of the tank and coming back into the world, I compare it to exiting the womb. No, I can’t actually recall what that was like, but I imagine it’s similar – everything is bright, crisp, and fresh. Any food that touches your tastebuds, any sounds that touch your eardrums, any sights that touch your eyes… It’s no longer dull, and you can appreciate the world as if you’re experiencing it for the first time.
To me and many other floaters, it’s a way of resetting and finding a new beginning. Before swim meets my dad used to tell me “Leave all your energy in the pool!” Now I leave my (negative) energy in the pod as I approach what is to come.
Cheers to a new decade! Our team at Soulex cannot wait to see what is in store for the DC area in 2020.
